Kareri Lake, an apt alternative to Triund Trek

Kareri Lake near Dharamshala and Mcleodganj in Himachal Pradesh is at an altitude of 2950 metres above sea level. It is a shallow fresh water lake, which lies within Dhauladhar Range of Himalayas. Dhauladhars act as a water source for this lake owing to melting of snow. Trail until Kareri Lake is through forest of Silver Oak, Pines and Rhododendron trees. Kareri Lake trek is a paradise for a first time trekker. It is a nice alternative to Triund trek, which on weekends remain overcrowded due to to huge inflow of tourists and trekkers. Area around lake also serves as base camp for Minkiani Pass and Lam Dal, which is a huge lake on other side of Minkiani Pass. Kareri Lake remains frozen from January to February, whereas it experiences heavy rainfall during July and August.

Trek starts from Kareri village, which is 27 kms from Dharamshala. It is a quaint beautiful village. A motorable road connects Kareri village with Dharamshala. Road condition of last 9 kms from Ghera until Kareri is poor and prone to landslides. Groh and Chadi are other villages on the way from Dharamshala to Kareri village.
A clear day at Kareri village provides vivid views of Indrahara/Indrahar Pass and Mun Peak, which is highest peak of region.

Please note that this itinerary is for summer months i.e. April to June and September to October. For winters, we put a fixed camp at Rioti on Day 1 as well as Day 2. In that case, we go to Kareri Lake on Day 2 and come back to Rioti campsite by evening.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1

27 kms drive from Dharamshala to Kareri village and 8.5 kms trek from Kareri Village to Rioti

We arrange pickup from Dharamshala Bus Stand at 6:30 AM. Dharamshala is around 10 kms from McLeodganj and there are regular shared cab services available between two cities. 27 kms of journey from Dharamshala to Kareri village takes about 1.5 hours. We provide breakfast at a local home in Kareri village.

Trek starts by 10 AM after our trek lead gives a brief round of introduction and instructions. As we start the trek, we pass through beautiful farms and slate roof houses. Initial trek of 2 kms is through under construction road. The forest trail starts after taking right turn from bridge on this road.

Trail moves alongside Nyund River. This river serves as source of drinking water during whole trek. River acts as our companion during the entire trek and the soothing sound of water gushing through the forest and over the rocks provides a meditating effect. Forest trail is through rocky terrain. Entire trail is in the form of steps, which locals have laid for ease of walking.

After taking lunch break on the route, we proceed towards Rioti, camping site for first day. Rioti is located at an altitude of 2550 metres above sea level. There are many small cafes too along the way. An old iron bridge welcomes us to Rioti. Rioti is an ideal place to camp due to flat area and availability of water.

Please note that if you reach late at Dharamshala on Day 1, i.e. beyond buffer time of 1 hour, you will have to reach Kareri village on your own expenses. However, we will assist you fully in booking of cabs.

Day 2

4.5 kms trek (Rioti-Kareri Lake)

Day starts with morning tea at 7. We start trek towards Kareri Lake by 10 AM.

We plan to Reach Kareri Lake by 2 PM. Terrain is similar as on first day with lesser trees. 4.5 kms trek from Rioti until Kareri Lake takes around 3-4 hours. This day’s trek is through beautiful surroundings and besides many small waterfalls.

Kareri Lake is located at an altitude of 2950 metres. Interested people can go to Gajj or visit Lord Shiva Temple. Gajj is a local term, which means a flat area. It is at 20 minutes hike from the lake and is located towards east of Kareri Lake.

Kareri Lake also serves as the base camp for Minkiani Pass and Lam Dal.

Day 3

13 kms trek (Kareri Lake – Kareri Village) and 27 kms drive from Kareri village to Dharamshala

This is a comparatively longer day but easiest of all as we descend through entire 13 kms. 

Day starts at 7 AM. Post that, if time and weather permits, we try to have brief yoga and meditation sessions. Trek starts by 9 AM from Kareri Lake towards Kareri Village using same route that we used while ascending. We plan to reach Kareri village by 4:30 PM. From Kareri village, we move in pre-arranged cabs towards Dharamshala. We plan to reach Dharamshala Bus Stand by 7 PM

Please Note that this itinerary is for summer months i.e. April to June and September to October. For winters, we put a fixed camp at Rioti on Day 1 as well as Day 2. In that case, we go to Kareri Lake on Day 2 and come back to Rioti campsite by evening.

Trekking Shoes 1. It is advisable to have Trekking shoes as they prevent ankle twist and have much better grip than normal sports shoes. Trekking shoes need to have soles with good grip and ankle support. We would suggest investing in good quality waterproof trekking shoes. They can last for up to 12-13 treks. Please use new trekking shoes for 3-4 days prior to trek. If used directly on the trek, there are high chances of shoe bite which can be very irritating. 2. Purchase 1 size bigger than the normal that you wear. If you use shoe with size as 8, buy trekking shoes with size as 9 as while descending toes of the feet would touch the end which might cause feet to swell. So it’s better to have one size larger.

Although Trek lead and guides would have medical kit, still we would suggest to carry a personal medical kit as well.

    • Crocin (in case of fever)- 3 tablets

    • ORS/Electrolyte (3 packets – They help a lot when energy levels start to deplete and body is in need of Salt)
    • Combiflam (Pain Killer) – 3 tablets

High Altitude Dome Tents

• We provide high altitude dome tents, which we have tested successfully in different weather conditions and varying terrains
• We have different tents according to occupancy from single person to 5 people. (Please inform us in advance in case you wish to opt for a more than 3-person tent)
• After each trek, we clean our tents thoroughly and dry them under sun

Sleeping Bags and Mattresses

• Our Sleeping bags are specially customized by our team to handle different kind of weather conditions
• Inner material of our sleeping bags in down feather which can help to sustain temperatures as low as -15 to -20 degrees Celsius
• All the sleeping bags have detachable inner fleece liners, which can be removed especially for summer months
• Length of sleeping bags is such that a person of up to 6 feet and 5 inches can comfortably sleep
• We have different kinds of insulated mattresses according to weather conditions. For summer months, we use mattresses of 3 to 5 mm in thickness whereas for winters, we use 8 mm ones
• We dry our sleeping bags under sun from time to time


• We understand that after a tough day of trekking, our body is in dire need of nutrients. Keeping that in mind, we design our food menu in such a way that all the nutrients are replenished

We believe that to thoroughly enjoy the trek, basic fitness is necessary. These fitness tips will help in making your trek more enjoyable rather than an arduous activity.
For a moderate trek like Kareri, a basic level of physical fitness is necessary before start of the trek.

Training plan is divided into four categories Aerobic Fitness (Cardiovascular fitness), Anaerobic fitness (Strength and Resistance training), Flexibility training and Nutrition.

Cardiovascular fitness is the ability of the heart, blood cells and lungs to supply oxygen-rich blood to the working muscle tissues and the ability of the muscles to use oxygen to produce energy for movement.

Training plan:
We would suggest a daily jog of 3-4 kms on flat surface like in your nearby playground or street.

Anaerobic exercises are defined as short duration, high intensity exercises lasting from 10 seconds to 30 seconds. Anaerobic exercise comprises brief, strength-based activities, such as sprinting or bodybuilding. Anaerobic workouts are also called “resistance training.”

Training plan:
For beginners, do a daily 3 sets of10 bodyweight pushups, 3 sets 20 bodyweight squats, 3*30 seconds Plank Hold and 5*100 meter sprints (full power)
Take good amount of rest between sets

Flexibility is the ability of muscles and tendons to relax and stretch easily. It determines the amount of movement your bones can make in any direction around joints such as shoulders, elbows, hips and knees. Stretching your hamstrings, quadriceps, hip flexors and low back muscles regularly, promotes relaxation in the tissues reducing the strain on your back.

Training plan:
We would suggest daily stretch for about 15 minutes, it will not only make your trek easy and cramp free but also improves your posture and helps to prevent low back pain.

Few flexibility exercises you can do daily are:
· Runners Stretch, Standing side stretch, Seated back twists, Butterflies, Pigeon Pose, Cobra pose, mountain pose, Hamstring stretch series
· Stretch daily after your aerobic or anaerobic exercise sessions

Last but most important point is Nutrition. Our body is what we eat. We should treat it like a temple and keep it pure.

Nutrition Tips:
· Never skip your breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of your day so have it lavishly and eat within an hour after you wake up
· Drink plenty of water, about 3-4 litres a day
· Avoid all junk, sugars
· Eat lots of vegetables, fruits, healthy fats, good carbs and increase your protein intake
· Avoid eating heavy meals after sunset or eat at least 2 hours before you sleep

How to reach Dharamshala?

Dharamshala, second capital of Himachal Pradesh is located at around 10 kms from Mcleodganj, which is known for home of Dalai Lama. Lying in eastern part of Himachal Pradesh, Mcleodganj is also known as “Little Lhasa” (Lhasa being the capital of Tibet) because of presence of large number of Tibetans.

Both the cities are well connected by road from nearby major cities of New Delhi and Chandigarh. Dharamshala is located at distance of 243 kms from Chandigarh and 493 kms from New Delhi. It usually takes 6-7 hours to reach Dharamshala from Chandigarh and 10-11 hours from New Delhi. Road condition between New Delhi and Dharamshala is good with proper metalled roads between 2 cities. Chandigarh is located at mid point between New Delhi and Dharamshala.

There are regular government buses of Himachal roadways, Haryana roadways and Punjab roadways between New Delhi and Dharamshala. Government bus options include both Semi sleeper AC Volvo and non AC buses. Apart from government operated buses, many private bus operators too ply their Volvo buses on this route. However, private buses usually depart during evening and night time only from Delhi and Chandigarh.

Apart from bus, one can opt for train, or air options too to reach Dharamshala. However these services are not directly available until Dharamshala.
Pathankot is nearest railway station to Dharamshala. It is located at 80 kms from Dharamshala. There are regular bus and taxi services available from Patahankot towards Dharamshala.

Gaggal airpot near Kangra is nearest airport to Dharamshala and Mcleodganj. It is located at 17 kms from Dharamshala and 27 kms from Mcleodganj. There are taxi services available from airport for Dharamshala and Mcleodganj.

We never cancel a trek/trip from our side unless it is because of some uncontrollable natural conditions like landslides or extreme weather conditions under which it is not safe to operate a trek/ trip. If that is the case, and we got to know it before starting date of the trek, we either refund your amount in full or would suggest an alternative trek/trip within same dates.

However, if you cancel a trek/trip, there are some cancellation charges as below:

• For any cancellations 1 week prior to starting of trek/trip, 70% of booking amount is refunded
• For any cancellations 3-6 days prior to starting of trek/trip, 50% of booking amount is refunded
• For any cancellations 1-2 days prior to starting of trek/trip, no amount is refunded

Example, for a trek/trip starting on 1st August,

• Any cancellations on or before 25th July, 70% of booking amount is refunded
• Any cancellations between 26th-29th July (both dates inclusive), 50% of booking is refunded
• Any cancellations on 30th and 31st July, no amount is refunded
For any bookings made within 3-6 days before starting of the trek/trip, only 50% of booking amount is refunded on cancellations
For any bookings made on last 2 days before starting of the trek/trip, no amount is refunded

1. Are there mobile signals at any place on the trek?

Unfortunately or fortunately, there are no mobile signals at any place on the trek. Even the BSNL and Airtel Postpaid connections do not work. After leaving Dharamshala, there are mobile signals till Kareri village, which is 27 kms from Dharamshala. So, please inform your loved ones in advance. Mobile signals are also there for initial 2 kms of the trail along the metaled road. After one enters forest area, there are no signals.

2. Are there any ATMs at the base?

ATMs are available in Dharamshala and at Groh village on the way to Kareri village. There are no ATMs at Kareri village, which is base of this trek. 

3. Are there any grocery shops at Kareri village or along the trail?

There are couple of grocery shops available at Kareri village, which are open throughout the year. There are 5-6 grocery shops and small cafe’s too along the trail but they are open from March till June and September till mid January. There are couple of shops and cafes near Kareri lake too.

4. Is there availability of drinking water along the trail?

Kareri Lake is one such trek where there is no scarcity of water along the entire trail. Since we trek along side River Nyund, drinking water is readily available for most of the trail. Please do not consume still/standing water and if you are allergic, do carry a small water filter with you. Try to first boil and then only drink the water.

5. Are there any camping facilities available near the lake in case I wish to trek on my own?

There are couple of rooms available in temple premises near the lake. These are free of cost. Though condition of rooms is not very good. One must take sleeping bag and mattress in case he/she is willing to stay there. Also, during summers, shop owners along the trail and at Kareri village provide tents aand sleeping bags on rent.

6. What kind of physical fitness is needed for this trek?

Since Kareri is a moderate level trek, a basic level of fitness is mandatory to ensure that you complete the trek smoothly. You can click here to check general fitness plan. Please refer to intermediate level for this trek.

7. Is it safe to trek with kids?

Minimum age required for this trek is 8 years. For children below age of 8, it might be difficult to cope with consistent uphill trails. 

8. Do I need to carry printout of booking confirmation?

No, you need not carry that.

9. What kind of documents I need to carry?

Please carry government issued ID card (Voter’s ID, or Passport, or Aadhar Card) in original as well as a copy. It is sometimes required for permission purposes. In addition, please carry a filled and duly signed copies of Disclaimer and Declaration Forms as well as Medical Forms. We mail you these forms on successful registration.

10. What kind of Washroom arrangements are there at campsites?

We pitch at least 2 toilet tents at each campsite. We make a deep pit within the tent. That pit is surrounded by mud and a shovel. After you answer nature’s call, please cover it with mud using the shovel. After you get out of the tent, do not forget to zip the tent properly. Do not leave it open.
However, there are no provisions for bathing. Moreover, it is not recommended too, especially on days of treks because our bodies are warm.

11. What if I fall ill and cannot continue the trek?

In a case of emergency, our trek lead first provides you basic first aid and then with a helper take you to nearest road head. They can also make a temporary stretcher if need arises. From road head, they will take you to nearest hospital for your treatment and inform your loved ones. Please note that vehicle and hospital charges will have to be borne by you.

12. What if a trek gets cancelled due to nature’s calamity?

If a trek is cancelled due to nature’s calamity and we got to know it before starting date of the trek, either we will issue a full refund (after deducting Internet handling charges) or provide an option to take alternative trek. However, if it is cancelled on starting date of the trek, or due to nature’s calamity, we have to change the trek or route while on a trek, there will be no refund.

13. Do I need to wash my utensils?

No, you need not do that. Our helpers will clean the utensils and make them ready for next meal.

14. Is there any permission required to camp in case I wish to do it on my own?

Generally a permission is not needed in case you are camping overnight. But since this is a forest area, we advise to camp only at safe locations along the marked trail and near cafes or shops. 

How to reach Kareri village?

There is no direct bus from Dharamshala till Kareri village. However, bus service is available till Ghera village. Earliest Himachal Roadways Transport Corporation (HRTC) bus departs from Dharamshala bus stand at 7:30 AM and reaches Ghera village by 8:30 AM. Other buses are there at 10:30 AM and 2:30 PM from Dharamshala. Earliest bus departs from Ghera towards Dharamshala at 9:30 AM. Other buses are available at 12:30 AM and last bus at 4:30 PM. Please cross check once from inquiries counter at Dharamshala Bus Stand before finalizing on timings. Contact Number of Dharamshala bus stand is 01892-224903.

Shared cabs are not very frequently available from Dharamshala till Kareri village. But if available, they charge around Rs 100 – Rs 150 per person. While non sharing ones charge Rs 1500 – Rs 2000 for one side trip.

Kareri village is located at 9 kms from Ghera. From Ghera, one can take shared taxis (Sumo/Bolero) for around Rs 50 per person till Kareri village. Non sharing ones would cost around Rs 500 – Rs 700.

Kareri is a small village in Kangra district of Dhauladhars. It is clearly visible from Naddi, a small town near Mcleodganj.

People in village are mostly involved in agriculture and cattle rearing. As of 2011 census, village has a population of 377 with 189 males and 188 females. In case someone wants to stay in this scenic village, there are 3 options.

Best option is to stay with locals in their homes. In that way, you will be able to learn about local culture and in true essence experience the village life.

Other option is to pitch your own tent or hire a one on rent. There are many places in village where you can pitch your tent as well as take one on rent. Before pitching, please do take permission from locals nearby 🙂

If you want solidarity, it would be ideal to stay in Forest Rest House. Located at half a kilometer from the village, rest house is nestled in serene surroundings facing vast open views of Kangra valley. Surrounded by very few homes, its an apt place to get relaxed from fast paced city lives. However, it is better to get a room booked in advance. One can get in touch with Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Dharamshala at  0189 222 4887 to book the rest house.

Known as “Land of Gods” or “Devbhumi”, locations across Himachal Pradesh has many religious and spiritual significance associated with them. Kareri Lake is no different.

There are couple of stories that locals narrate are related to the lake.

One is related to Lord Shiva. As per it, once, Lord Shiva was taking a bath near Kareri village. During that time, some local ladies were passing nearby. With an apprehension of being seen by them, he decided to move to a different location. He ran to a point till where lake is formed today. At that time there was no lake. Being the greatest God, he created the Kareri Lake there and then took a bath in the lake.

Another one seems to be of a later stage. As of now, river Nyund originates from the southern end of Kareri Lake and its water serves as drinking and other daily basic purposes for villages nearby. But local narrate that in earlier times, river used to originate westwards of the lake. Since west side had a steep decline, water of the lake used to cause floods in the villages towards that side. Due to that every year during monsoons, it caused a havoc in those villages. To prevent this, the head of those villages got an idea. He announced a grand lunch party near Kareri Lake for the villagers on the other side. On the day of lunch hundreds of people had gathered near the lake. Suddenly, head of west side proceeded towards head of other villages on south side. He told his counterpart, that their huge utensil, which will be used for cooking had fallen inside the lake. He was clever enough to point in south direction. He added that without that it would not be feasible to continue with the lunch. So, his team needs to take take out. Without knowing his intentions, his counterpart agreed to that. On getting approval, his team started to dig the portion of land at south end of the lake. As a result, now water started to flow towards south, thus ending the misery of villagers on the west.

If you are looking for 3 days alternative to Kareri, nearest option is Himani Chamunda. There is a temple at the top dedicated to Goddess Chamunda. This trek is in vicinity of Dharamshala. Trek starts from Kand village, which is 20 kms from Dharamshala. Its a 8.5 kms trail one side, of which first 4 kms of rocky and has loose gravels while last 4.5 kms has a mix of meadows and rocky surface. Place at mid point is known as Sadrai. Sadrai has a water source too, thus making it an ideal campsite. Himani Chamunda is also base for Talang Pass trek, which further takes one to Bara Bhangal village.

Another ideal trek, which provides stunning views. Located in majestic Kullu valley, Beas Kund is a group of ponds that act as source of Beas river, which flows through Himachal Pardesh and Punjab. It is surrounded by peaks such as Hanuman Tibba, Patalsu, Friendship peak, Ladakhi, Seven sisters. It is a moderate level trek of 16 kms. One got to cross a couple of rivulets too on the way to Bhakarthatch, an ideal place to camp. You can check more information here.

A strenuous but rewarding trek, Churdhar provides panoramic views from the peak. Since, it is highest peak of lower Himalayas, clear and unobstructed views are available from the top. It is a long trail of 18 kms one side in case you are starting from Nauradhar side. There is one more trail from Sarahan side. Though it is a short trail of 7 kms, its much more steep compared to one from Nauradhar.

One can take a halt at Jamnallah, which is 7 kms from Nauradhar. There are couple of shops at Jamnallah that remain open from April – November/December. One can also stay at Chureshwar Maharaj temple, which is 2 kms behind Churdhar peak. You can find more information here.

Trail mentioned in “Details” tab is most preferred among trekkers. However, if you have already done that trail and wish to explore an alternate one, there are couple of more trails. One, you can take an eastern trail, which is through Gajj. Gajj is a local term for any flat area of land in mountains. Here, Gajj is the flat mountain visible opposite Rioti. From Gajj, one can continue through the ridge and will reach another flat land, again known as Gajj but this one is towards east of Kareri Lake.

There is another longer trail to reach the lake. It starts from Chamba. From there, one needs to cross Minkiani Pass. It takes approximately 2 days to reach Minkiani Pass. If one has luxury of time, he/she may add another day to visit Lam Dal before crossing Minkiani Pass. Lam Dal is a high altitude alpine lake, which is almost thrice the span of Kareri Lake. From Lam Dal campsite, it takes 6-7 hours of trek to reach Kareri Lake. Please note that this portion is open only from April end till November/December. Do check weather forecasts before proceeding with this route as sudden snowfall cannot be ruled out at any time of the year. Also, as this route is not frequently used by locals/trekkers, one may encounter wild animals. So, one needs to be extra careful and fully prepared.

An awesome experience with trek trails. We went to kareri trek last weekend n it surely was an unforgettable experience.The arrangements made by them were amazing and unexpected too. Food was simply amazing and was delicious too. They were taking care of each member during the trek and apart from trekking rest activities were really marvellous . The team is way too cooperative and fun. This experience will be cherished by us forever.

I went on a business trip to Chandigarh all the way from NZ. Before I left I googled Trekking in Himalayas, as i had a spare weekend free , and came across Trek Trails.
These guys (3 founders who decided to make a living out of what they love) were amazing and went well above what I expected.Apparently I was the first non indian national to do a trek with them ( as they are a fairly new company ) but was everything I wanted in a 2 day trek.
If you are looking for a positive, safe, environmentally respectful trekking company I would definitely recommend TrekTrails. You will not be disappointed!!!

I went to Kareri Lake Trek with TrekTrails. It was my first ever trek, and TrekTrail made it one of the most memorable times of my life. I had never been to any trek before, loved this Trek very much. As I was a beginner, I had no idea what will be there on the Trek. With the awesome fellow Trekkers and our guides Nitin and Dalbir, it was like a group of crazy people climibing the mountains. On the way, there were so many awesome views of the
mountains, and rains made the trek more challenging. It was tiring
at the end of the day, but the great food and the stay near the running waters makes you forget everything. Then the food, antakshari and the bonfire at night made it more interesting. There were other activities e.g. Yoga, musical night, dance etc. Nitin and Dalbir – you guys are simply amazing, very
patient, supportive, and Nitin’s Yoga activity in the morning was too good and
much needed to start the day afresh. Overall I had a very good
experience with TrekTrails, and my love for Himalayas developed more.
This Kareri Lake experience inspired me to have a Trek every quarter and my love for Himalayas has gone to another level. This last week, I went to Prashar Lake with TrekTrails, and again it was a wonderful experience climbing the mountains. The trek was full of beautiful views, clouds on top of the mountain, tea at local resident’s place, and music while trekking made it even more
TrekTrails, you are simply amazing, a long way to go for you guys. I had a very very good experience with TrekTrails, and will strongly recommend to everyone to Trek with these guys!!! We’ll meet soon in near future for more treks 🙂

We, while sitting during one of our tea breaks, decided to go for a trek, a quick surf on the net introduced us to TrekTrails. High on enthusiasm, low on stamina, with great apprehensions we went on a trip with Trek Trails to Kareri Lake in Jun16.
But the outcome, was the most pleasant, life changing trip experience.
Beautiful, Breathtaking are understatements for the location.
The team led by Dalbir and Nitin, was dependable, friendly and regimented.
Food was just like home-made. Yoga, Workout sessions; Singing and dancing around Bon Fires made the trip even more exhilarating and memorable!!

I went with TrekTrails on the kareri lake trek, 20-22nd may.
The trek and the journey in itself were very mesmerising, and to top that the organizers did such a great job at making the whole trip comfortable and very memorable.
As you register, they send you welcome email guiding you what to expect on the trip, how to prepare, what to bring along etc. We had to pack minimum stuff. The organisers bring with them tents, cooking utensils, cooking staff who cook delicious meals, and lots of experience. You get everything on the camp – soup, full meals, sweetdish, pasta, papad , popcorn next to the bonfire (not kidding). We played antakshri for hours, played dog in the pond game, had our head spinning rolling on grounds, had spiritually nurturing yoga session ending with a fun group laughter session. 😀
Overall, It was the best experience I could have hoped for. Will definitely join TrekTrails again for other locations. 🙂
