Bhrigu Lake Trek

Bhrigu Lake at an altitude of 4090 metres near Manali is a holy lake and natural wonder in itself. It resembles a huge crater and circular in shape.
Locals believe that Bhrigu Rishi used to meditate besides the lake and visits the lake once every year.
On a clear day, one can see Friendship, Ladakhi, Hanuman Tibba and other peaks from various points of the Bhrigu Lake trek. Lake lies to the east of Rohtang Pass, which is at height 3978 metres. Bhrigu top at height 4300 metres besides the lake also provides a view of Hampta valley.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1

Manali to Gulaba by road and 3 kms moderate trek from Gulaba to Thatch

As our bodies are not used to higher altitudes, purpose of Day 1 is to get the trekkers acclimatized to the high altitudes that we scale on Day 2 and Day 3. First day starts with pick up from Government bus stand at Mall Road of Manali. Trek Lead will meet you there at 10 AM. Soon after pickup, we provide packed lunch, dry rations. After that, we head towards Gulaba in cabs. We use either Sumo, or Traveller, or Gypsy for transportation.

Gulaba, which is starting point of the trek, is at an altitude of 2700 metres above sea level. It is located at 20 kms from Manali on Manali – Rohtang Pass road. Road condition is fantastic between Manali and Gulaba. Journey from Manali to Gulaba takes about 45 minutes. After trek lead gives briefing to complete group, trek starts at 11:30 AM from a point named 14 mod.

It is a short hike of 3 kms and it generally takes 2 hours’ to reach Thatch campsite. Thatch is a local word, which translates to a “flat land”. It is a beautiful campsite. On a clear day, one can clearly see Solang valley from here. Availability of water, distance from road head makes this an ideal campsite for first day.

Please note that if you are reaching late at Manali on Day 1, i.e. beyond buffer time of 1 hour, you will have to reach Gulaba at your own expenses. However, we will assist you fully in booking of cabs.


Day 2

5 kms trek from Thatch to Rola Kholi or Rola Koli

Trek starts by 9 AM from Thatch. This day, we move towards Rola Kholi, or Rola Koli. Trek is a gradual climb for first 4 kms and last 1 kms is moreover flat. On the way, we cross 2 seasonal waterfalls and we also get a chance to see blooming flowers of different varieties in the months of June – August.

It generally takes 3-4 hours to reach Rola Kholi from Thatch. Located at 3800 metres above sea level, Rola Kholi is above treeline. Treeline is a geographical term that means “an imaginary line above which trees cannot grow”. Due to absence of trees, there are clear views visible from here. On a clear day, one can catch a glimpse of Hanuman Tibba, Friendship, and Ladakhi peaks among others of Dhaulagiri range from here. There is a glacial fed river too that accentuates the beauty of this place. 

Day 3

7 kms trek to Bhrigu lake and back to Rola Kholi

It is the longest day of trek. Due to this, we start the trek comparatively earlier at 7:30 AM. Since we come back to same campsite at end of the day, we can leave our rucksacks at the campsite itself. Instead, carry a small daypack. It can have useful items like a water bottle, packed lunch, dry ration, raincoat, sunglasses and a jacket.

It is a steep climb of 3.5 kms until Bhrigu Lake. We cross the river and start ascending through the grassy patches. Slowly, terrain start to change and as we ascend, there is more of rocky terrain. Last 1 km of the trek is through boulders. One must be careful and try to make a good grip especially if it is raining, or it is snowy.

Mesmerizing sight of Bhrigu Lake is worth the effort it takes to reach the lake. We usually spend an hour besides the lake. If weather and terrain conditions are fine, we take interested trekkers to Bhrigu top, which is at an altitude of 4300 metres. Bhrigu top provides a wonderful view of various peaks and Hampta valley.

After collecting lifelong memories of visiting this natural wonder, we head back towards Rola Kholi 

Day 4

7 kms trek to Gulaba and 20 kms drive to Manali

Last day of the trek is easiest, as we descend the entire route from 3800 metres to 2700 metres. This day, if weather is fine, we also conduct yoga and muscle relaxing session. While descending, we take the same route as on first day.

We reach Gulaba by 2 PM, and after final thank you note; we proceed towards Manali, where we reach Manali by 4 PM.

Please take a buffer time of at least an hour while booking return tickets.

  • Rucksack (50-60 litres): Keep it light, keep only necessary items
  • Daypack to carry water bottle and some eatables
  • Trekking Shoes 1. It is advisable to have Trekking shoes as they prevent ankle twist and have much better grip than normal sports shoes. Trekking shoes need to have soles with good grip and ankle support. We would suggest investing in good quality waterproof trekking shoes. They can last for up to 12-13 treks. Please use new trekking shoes for 3-4 days prior to trek. If used directly on the trek, there are high chances of shoe bite which can be very irritating. 2. Purchase 1 size bigger than the normal that you wear. If you use shoe with size as 8, buy trekking shoes with size as 9 as while descending toes of the feet would touch the end which might cause feet to swell. So it’s better to have one size larger.
  • Sandals/Slippers for walking around the campsite
  • Trek pants (2 pairs)
  • Full sleeve T-shirts (2 pairs including the one you are wearing)
  • 1 Full sleeve woollens/fleece
  • Thick Jacket
  • Socks (2 pairs): 1 cotton (for trekking) and 1 woolen (used while sleeping)
  • Gloves(1 pair)
  • Woollen Cap/Balaclava
  • Raincoat/Poncho.
  • Water Bottle.
  • Sunglasses (must for winter season as snow reflects UV rays).
  • Toiletries(Sunscreen – SPF 30+, light towel, lip balm, toilet paper/wet tissues).
  • Headlamp/LED torch.
  • Trekking Pole as it prevents joints from injury and provides a good grip while trekking.
  • Plastic covers: While packing, use plastic bags to ensure the clothes and other essentials remain dry in case of rain.
  • 1 lunchbox and spoon for carrying packed lunch.
Although Trek lead and guides would have medical kit, still we would suggest to carry a personal medical kit as well.

ORS/Electrolyte (3 packets – They help a lot when energy levels start to deplete and body is in need of Salt)

    • Band Aid – 2 strips
    • Paracetamol – 3 tablets
    • Moov spray
    • Avil 25 mg(in case of allergies) – 3 tablets
    • Crocin (in case of fever)- 3 tablets
    • Vomistop – 2 tablets

*These medicines are advised on basis of our experiences in mountains. Please consult your doctor/physician before taking any medicine.

Mules/Porter Service: Rs 500 per rucksack per day. If informed at base location or at campsite, charges would be Rs 700 per rucksack per day
Raincoat/Poncho on rent: Rs 250 per raincoat/poncho for entire trek
Trekking Pole on rent: Rs 100 per trekking pole per day

Transportation from Delhi to Delhi or Chandigarh to Chandigarh also available at extra cost. We provide return tickets through Volvo buses, but participant needs to confirm us at least 5-6 days in advance

• For any cancellations 2 weeks prior to starting of trek, 70% of booking amount would be refunded
• For any cancellations 3-14 days prior to starting of trek, 50% of booking amount would be refunded
• For any cancellations 1-2 days prior to starting of trek, no amount would be refunded

Example, for a trek starting on 1st August,

• Any cancellations on or before 18th July, 70% of booking amount would be refunded
• Any cancellations between 19th-29th July (both dates inclusive), 50% of booking would be refunded
• Any cancellations on 30th and 31st July, no amount would be refunded

For any bookings made within 3-6 days before starting of the trek, only 50% of booking amount would be refunded on cancellations
For any bookings made on last 2 days before starting of the trek, no amount would be refunded on cancellations

We believe that to thoroughly enjoy the trek, basic fitness is necessary. These fitness tips will help in making your trek more enjoyable rather than an arduous activity.
For a moderate-difficult trek like Bhrigu, a good level of physical fitness is necessary before start of the trek.

Training plan is divided into four categories Aerobic Fitness (Cardiovascular fitness), Anaerobic fitness (Strength and Resistance training), Flexibility training and Nutrition.

Cardiovascular fitness is the ability of the heart, blood cells and lungs to supply oxygen-rich blood to the working muscle tissues and the ability of the muscles to use oxygen to produce energy for movement.

Training plan:
Mix uphill training and jogging on plains. You can do 2km of uphill running and 2kms of jog on flat surfaces

Anaerobic exercises are defined as short duration, high intensity exercises lasting from 10 seconds to 30 seconds. Anaerobic exercise comprises brief, strength-based activities, such as sprinting or bodybuilding. Anaerobic workouts are also called “resistance training.”

Training plan:
Here, try adding more resistance and increase the volume
Try to do 4 sets of 12 pushups (add resistance of ¼ bodyweight), 4 sets of 12 squats (Add resistance half of bodyweight), 3*45 seconds Plank Hold and 6*100 meter sprints (full power).
Rest time should be less than 1 minute

Flexibility is the ability of muscles and tendons to relax and stretch easily. It determines the amount of movement your bones can make in any direction around joints such as shoulders, elbows, hips and knees. Stretching your hamstrings, quadriceps, hip flexors and low back muscles regularly, promotes relaxation in the tissues reducing the strain on your back.

Training plan:
We would suggest daily stretch for about 15 minutes, it will not only make your trek easy and cramp free but also improves your posture and helps to prevent low back pain.

Few flexibility exercises you can do daily are:
· Runners Stretch, Standing side stretch, Seated back twists, Butterflies, Pigeon Pose, Cobra pose, mountain pose, Hamstring stretch series
· Stretch daily after your aerobic or anaerobic exercise sessions

Last but most important point is Nutrition. Our body is what we eat. We should treat it like a temple and keep it pure.

Nutrition Tips:
· Never skip your breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of your day so have it lavishly and eat within an hour after you wake up
· Drink plenty of water, about 3-4 litres a day
· Avoid all junk, sugars
· Eat lots of vegetables, fruits, healthy fats, good carbs and increase your protein intake
· Avoid eating heavy meals after sunset or eat at least 2 hours before you sleep

1. Are there mobile signals at any place on the trek?

Unfortunately or fortunately, there are no mobile signals at any place on the trek. Even the BSNL and Airtel Postpaid connections do not work. After leaving Manali, there are mobile signals for around 10-15 minutes only. So, please inform your loved ones in advance.

2. Are there any ATMs at the base?

ATMs are available in Manali. There are couple of State Bank of India ATMs at Mall road. There is an ICICI and PNB ATM too at Hadimba temple road. We suggest you to carry some extra case from the city your travel as there might be shortage of cash near pickup point due to limited number of ATMs.

3. What kind of physical fitness is needed for this trek?

Since Bhrigu Lake is a moderate level trek, a basic level of fitness is mandatory. If you have an active lifestyle and are involved in any kind of Sports regularly, it will be a fairly easy trek for you. 4. Is it safe to trek with kids?

Minimum age required for this trek is 12 years. For children below age of 12, it might be difficult to cope with rising altitude and sudden change in terrain.

5. Do I need to carry printout of booking confirmation?

No, you need not carry that.

6. What kind of documents I need to carry?

Please carry government issued ID card (Voter’s ID, or Passport, or Aadhar Card) in original as well as a copy. It is sometimes required for permission purposes. In addition, please carry a filled and duly signed copies of Disclaimer and Declaration Forms as well as Medical Forms. We mail you these forms on successful registration.

7. What kind of Washroom arrangements are there at campsites?

We pitch at least 2 toilet tents at each campsite. We make a deep pit within the tent. That pit is surrounded by mud and a shovel. After you answer nature’s call, please cover it with mud using the shovel. After you get out of the tent, do not forget to zip the tent properly. Do not leave it open.
However, there are no provisions for bathing. Moreover, it is not recommended too, especially on days of treks because our bodies are warm.

8. What if I fall ill and cannot continue the trek?

In a casy of emergency, our trek lead first provides you basic first aid and then with a helper take you to nearest road head. They can also make a temporary stretcher if need arises. From road head, they will take you to nearest hospital for your treatment and inform your loved ones. Please note that vehicle and hospital charges will have to be borne by you.

9. What if a trek gets cancelled due to nature’s calamity?

If a trek is cancelled due to nature’s calamity and we got to know it before starting date of the trek, either we will issue a full refund or provide an option to take alternative trek. However, if it is cancelled on starting date of the trek, or due to nature’s calamity, we have to change the trek or route while on a trek, there will be no refund.

10. Do I need to wash my utensils?

No, you need not do that. Our helpers will clean the utensils and make them ready for next meal.

How to reach Manali?

Manali, being a tourist hub, is well connected by road from major cities of New Delhi and Chandigarh.

Manali is roughly 300 kms from Chandigarh and 550 kms from Delhi. It takes 9-10 hours of journey from Chandigarh whereas 13-14 hours from New Delhi. Overall road condition is very good. There are minor portions where road condition depends on weather conditions. Road condition in area around Sundernagar and Kullu deteriorate especially during monsoons and owing to this, one might encounter traffic jams.

Apart from government operated buses of Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab, many private bus operators too ply their Volvo buses on this route. However, private buses usually depart during evening and night time only from Delhi and Chandigarh whereas government buses are regular throughout the day.

Apart from road connectivity, one can opt for train, or air options too to reach Manali. However these services are not directly available until Manali.
Although, Jogindernagar is nearest railway station to Manali, but this station is not very well connected with other railway stations. Best option is to take a train until Chandigarh or Ambala. Both these cities have good bus services, which further connects to Manali. Ambala is located at distance of 210 kms from New Delhi and 40 kms from Chandigarh.

Bhunter airport, Kullu is nearest to Manali. It is located at 50 kms from Manali. Direct flights from Delhi to Bhunter are available and from there, regular cab options are available until Manali.

I have been to 2 treks with team trektrails: Kareri lake trek in May and Brighu lake in July. Both the experiences were enriching and fulfilling, thanks to the hosts of team. They organized the trek flawlessly, made everyone comfortable, had experienced guides, served hygienic food and gave us awesome memories in the form of photographs. Thanks !
